Day two in the windy city. We sleep in and have a quickie breakfast with Mat who is then off to a cultural eating experience. Tim and I were going to attend but unfortunately the tickets were sold out for the day. So instead, we head to the Museum of Science and Industry.
The museum had excellent exhibits, including the WWII German sub, U-505, which was captured by Allied Forces and helped to provide them with knowledge of German engineering technology but also with codes that would help them to understand radio transmissions. There was also a tornado creator, a coal mine and an entire area dedicated to the human body and the individual. Tim and I met in a competition of the mind, attempting to send a small metal ball into the opponents space, simply by relaxing the mind. Super zen master Tim won by miles as the crazy monkey in my head refused to pipe down.
We leave the museum to meet Mat for an Architectural Boar Tour of Chicago. We are late and miss the tour. So we have to re-book in to go on the 5.30pm tour as Mat will be engaged with the Blue Man Group. We have an excellent tour guide on our boat and the trip was definately a learning experience. We learned about how engineers changed the direction of the flow of the Michigan river, about the various "eras" of architecture - modernism, post-modernism etc etc. Chicago has an amazing skyline and it's buildings are not only tall but beautiful.
After the boat ride, Tim and I decide to walk down to the "Broadway of Chicago" and see what shows are on. We know that Billy Elliott is showing but have no interest in the show. We end up at the Cadillac Theature which is showing Shrek, the Musical. We arrive there at 7.28pm, to learn that the show was starting the 2 mins. We have a quick chat to the box office attendants who tell us that as students we can get discounted, on the night tickets for $25 each. Hell yeah we're in is our response. We buy our tickets with 1 min to spare and quickly put out butts in our seats.
Shrek the Musical follows the storyline of the first Shrek movie but also has little bits in between which make it that little bit funnier. Lord Farquard has more stage time than he did screen time and definately stole the show. So much so that he received a standing ovation at the end. It was definately well deserved.
As we leave the theatre, the predicted thunderstorms have hit Chicago and it is raining cats and dogs and cows and elephants. We wait for the rain to subside a little and then decide that we will have to make a run for it as we have no idea when the rain would stop and sleeping at the theatre was not an option. Umbrella-less, we brave the rain and 15 mins later we are back at our hotel, looking like we had just stepped out of a pool fully clothed.
It's late but Tim is hungry. We eat at the hotel restaurant while exchanging stories of the shows we had just seen (Blue Man vs Shrek) before it was time for bed and a ridiculously early start to the next day.
