Rainy days in the Big Apple

The next two days in New York was unfortunately wet and overcast.

Yesterday began as a dull dull day and eventually gave way to rain by 9.30am. Suffice to say, we were pleased that we had decided not to go up to the Empire State Building as we originally planned and headed to the Central Park Boathouse for breakfast instead. The Central Park Boathouse overlooks the lake in Central Park and also serves up a delicious breakfast/brunch with free flowing pastry baskets. Mmmm....

After stuffing our faces, we head to FAO Schwarz to check out the latest in kiddie toys and naturally to check out the 'big piano' from the movie 'Big'. Everyone appears to have seen this movie - except me. The short piano performance was so entertaining, we stuck around to watch it twice.

After FAO, we head uptown to Columbia to Bryn and Alev's new home. We stop for ridiculously large slices of pizza and then take shelter from the sudden rain in Tom's Restaurant, whose facade is famous for being used as the exterior shots of the diner frequented by Jerry and his friends in 'Seinfeld'.

Filled with food, we head back to Bryn and Alev's for a quick nap (not intentionally) and then line up at the tkts booth to buy half-price tickets to a musical called 'Next to Normal'. 'Next to Normal' is about a family attempting to looking after themselves under some emotional circumstances. It's on a similar line as Rent where the story presents some confronting issues but the music is light-hearted and, in the case, it's rock music. To kill time before the show, we head to a pub close to our hostel and the theatre to chill out an play some Monopoly Deal.

The next rainy morning was attempt two at going to the Empire State Building and it turned out to be even worse. So instead, we grab a quick breakfast and then hit the American Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planetarium. Then it's more Monoploy Deal before 'Bryn, Alev, Mat, Enrique, Tim and Ness go to White Castle' and then go to the hostel to sleep.
