Japan Part 5: Hiroshima

After a short ride on the Shinkansen, we arrive at Hiroshima and check into the Ryokan we are booked into for the next two days.

Our first morning in Hiroshima, we head over to the check out the Atomic Bomb Dome, Hiroshima Peace Park and War Museum. The most impressive exhibits in the War Museum are the models of the city before and after the atomic bomb detonated and panels of letters Hiroshima mayors have sent to world leaders of countries that are conducting nuclear tests since 1968. In wanting to stop the use of nuclear weapons, the mayor of Hiroshima sends a letter to protest every nuclear test, in the hopes that the letter they send will be the last.

Our next stop is Miyajima the island famous for it's torii gate, which appears to float on the water when the tide is high. It is also famous for the wild deer which roam the island and sleep on the foot paths at night. We visit Miyajima more for the deer.

That evening, we decide on an Italian dinner along the Ota River - the major river that flows through Hiroshima. After dinner, it's back to the Ryokan for an early night before our long trek the next day as we head to Koyasan.
