Savannah, Georgia

When settlers first arrived in the area, there was an incident in which a young girl fell into the river in which ships used to sail. The girl was named Anna and upon noticing her struggling in the river, her mother immediately started yelling to all the ships that were sailing by to "Save-Anna". And so was born the city of "Savannah". Or at least that's the story the locals will tell you.

Also known for being the city in which Forrest Gump sat on a bench waiting for a bus and said the famous line "life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get", the bench has since been removed and been placed in Savannah's History Museum to save it from the elements and potential theft. For movie trivia buffs, the church in the opening scene which the feather floats in front of is also 50m away from the bench.
Another side note, for the movie, they had to reverse the direction of traffic around the square so that people could be let on and off the bus on the correct side.

Savannah is also known the be the most haunted city in the US. However, we passed on actually taking an haunted tours... maybe next time. Instead, we use our time to indugle in some good southern comfort food. Paula Deen is an American cook/restauranteur who specialised in Southern food. Together with her sons, she owns and operates a place called the Lady and Sons. Naturally, we find our way there and indulge in a Southern comfort buffet.

A beautiful part of the city is River Street, which runs along the Savannah River. After filling our bellies, we take a stroll along the river and come across Savannah's Candy Kitchen. Savannah's Candy Kitchen is a massive 4,200 square feet (5,760 squares if I've calculated this correctly). It's packed full of all kinds on sweet goodies including ice-cream and taffy, pralines and candy apple, all made by hand (and some machines) in the shop.

Savannah is a quaint little city and I would have liked to spend an extra day there, especially to do a haunted city walk. However, we had more pressing things to attend to that resulted in us only being in Savannah for one day - Walt Disney World, Orlando.
