Road Trip!

Our holiday began quite interestingly. We were travelling for the first time with MegaBus, which operates their services with double decker buses. A great idea for transporting even more people from one place to another, if they had enough luggage space.

We arrived at South Station in Boston an hour before our scheduled bus departure. Because we were early, we witnessed the passengers boarding the bus for the earlier service. What had been happening from all the earlier serivces was that the buses would run out of luggage space and would have to get some passengers to wait for the next service to arrive. This of course would force them to to off load other passengers from the later service onto the next, and so the vicious cycle continued.

What made it interesting was that the MegaBus employee, whose role it was to help passengers onto the bus, continuously blamed passengers who had bags that HE thought was too large, even though their company policy was that each person was allowed one "standard sized bag" and one carry on. He went to the extent of pointing out passengers in the queue who had large bags and say that it was their fault that other passengers could not get on the bus.

We had one large bag, which Mr Grumpy Pants happily pointed out at least four times, royally pissing me off. While I am sorry that some passengers were unable to get onto their scheduled bus, I can't say that I'm overly apologetic for the size of our bag. It was what I considered to be a standard size and was actually quite light and I have taken it overseas several times. Moreover, we were going to be on the road for three weeks. What was the most annoying was that rather than apologizing for the way the buses were designed, or for MegaBus not specifying an actual bag size, the employee placed the passengers at fault.

At the end of the day, we did get on the bus and it lead to interesting discussion and chit chat amongst some of us, and eventually, an online tetris battle - for those interested, http://www.freetetris.org/. :)
